How to DIY Fringe Denim Jeans

Fringe is definitely in. And because it is a trend, the ones that are being sold are in a higher price range than I was willing to purchase. If you’re not willing to spend upwards of $80 on a decent pair of fringe jeans, and have some time on your hands (at least 3 hours), then this DIY fringe denim jeans tutorial is for you!

What you are going to need is:

  • Straight leg or ankle graze jeans. If you want a more super relaxed look, you could do this on flare jeans
  • Scissors
  • Seam ripper (from Michael’s crafts store)

Step 1: Cut the hem off of the jeans. Try to cut right where the stitching begins and simply go across.img_1509-2

Step 2: Once you have cut the hem, put on the jeans and use a pen to mark how high up you want the fringe to go. I chose mine to be a few inches above my ankle. img_1517

Step 3: Once you’ve marked where you want the fringe to stop, use the seam ripper on both sides of the jean up until where you marked. img_1513

Step 4: Once you have cut the seams on both sides, take your scissors and start cutting 1 inch wide slits into the jeans (up until where you marked). Doing this will make your job a whole lot easier once you start fringing.img_1561-2

Step 5 (optional): I put my jeans in the washer before starting to fringe. But you can put them in afterwards as well. When I put them in for a wash after I had worn them, I notice that the fringe pieces expanded in a sense. They were more soft to the touch. img_1519-2

Step 6: And now the fun work begins! You’re going to start pulling apart the loose threads that are hanging from each slit (as shown below). What you may notice as you start doing this is that some loose threads may be going the opposite way (when you pull it, instead of going downwards, the thread is pulling upwards). If this is the case, just switch to the other side of the slit and pull from there.img_1563Step 7: Once you reach the last few threads, you’re going to notice either a clump of black or white thread (which is what was holding all those blue threads together). You will remove this chunks by slipping pushing them upward and off of the remainder of the blue thread.img_1565-2

FIN!

Once you complete all those steps, you have officially fringed your own pair of DIY fringe denim jeans!diy fringe denim jeansBut it is so so worth it! I’ve gotten so many compliments on these already. Look out for an outfit post on Monday showing how I styled them!

Until next time…
