Satin Pajama Blazer

I think I’ve raved about why I love satin pieces so much and this Satin Pajama Blazer is no different. It’s one of those items that I immediately laid eyes on and picked up, no hesitation. The white piping detail is what sold me on this number. Also, hello versatility! This piece can be dressed up or down. I wore this fit to a friends birthday brunch at Bottega Louie a few weeks back.

Representation Matters

Yesterday was the Oscar’s and the queen, Viola Davis, won the award for Best Supporting Actress. And I was ELATED! I admire this woman so much. Her ability to bare it all and fully embody what it means to a black woman in every role she plays, whether on the big screen, television, or on stage (in which she is now officially the first Black Female Actor to win all three in acting).  The fact that she has taken off her wig, removed her makeup while on screen, and has shown her natural hair is so inspiring.

WHY?

Because this is a black woman baring it all. She is showing the world, through her roles, the true nature of different black women, past to present. As a black woman who used to despise my very prominent features (big nose, big lips, big eyes), seeing someone embrace them so effortlessly has made me realize how important it is to constantly have women like Davis in the media.

Representation matters. If we only see those who look like us represented negatively, then how are we expected to go out into the world thinking that we will be looked at any differently. Young (and old) black women are worthy of seeing themselves represented positively in mainstream media. They deserve to know that they are capable of accomplishing anything. That their beauty is enough. That they do not need any changes to fit into this world’s definition of beauty. Lastly, as we round out Black History Month, let us remember that
